Today one of the biggest events in finnish movies starts:
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a Finnish Fantasy/Horror movie about hunters in the Korvatunturi mountains who discover the secret behind Santa Claus.
"In the depths of the Korvatunturi mountains, 486 metres deep, lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up! This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus."
If you look back in history the Finnish version of the Santa legend is called Joulupukki.
The name Joulupukki means 'Yule Buck'. Joulupukki first came about as an evil, goat-like creature. He didn't give gifts to the children and he demanded their good behavior. He used to frighten people.
In December, pagan people had big festivals to ward off the Joulupukki.
For some unknown reason, this evil creature transformed into a much kinder, gentler character which closely resembles the American Santa Claus. He is probably a combination of many old folk customs and beliefs from around the world.
The film is a based on two short films, from 2003 and 2005, titled Rare Exports Inc by Jalmari and Juuso Helander.
We want to introduce you to both short films and at the bottom you can find the latest movie trailer from 2010...
And this is how everything startet in 2003:
"Just before the first snow of winter falls, professional hunters begin their work. The long process of tracking, hunting and transforming this king of the forest into a finished product is a time consuming process, but the final outcome is a reason to celebrate."
Two years later, following a particularly bad incident, they had to shoot this reproachful safety film on the handling and care of the Father Christmas during shipping:
The Official Safety Instructions:
"Not meant for the public eye, this film reveals the dark reality of what's wrong with company's product. With its primitive instincts triggered by bad behaviour of people around it, the seemingly tame Father Christmas will forget the intensive training and turn into a brutal beast. You better watch out, you better not cry, There's no room for mistakes."
So this is the actual trailer for the 2010 movie.
And it will be released 23rd December in Germany. The film will be shown worldwide in a lot of cinemas, which is actually really rare for a finnish movie production...but well done...so friends don't miss it...
